As part of a group of about 30 task applicants, she attended an employing fair Jan. 30 that showcased Washington State career opportunities at JBLM’s Hawk Career Center.<\/p>\n
“I simply try to benefit from all the resources and services that the (Transition Assistance Program) Center has to use, just to make sure I’m as prepared as possible,” she said.<\/p>\n
The focus of the job<\/a> fair on state work, rather than work in numerous markets, made it various than others on the installation. Sponsored by the Veterans Employee Resource Group, WorkSource and the TAP, it began with a panel of veterans from state companies, who shared their experiences and answered concerns. Following the panel, recruiters from state agencies were offered to answer hiring questions, said Frank Handoe, deputy transition services manager for the TAP.<\/p>\n Informational tables represented organizations including VERG, WorkSource and Washington State’s Department of Veterans Affairs and VA Apprenticeship Program; Department<\/a> of Children, Youth and Families; Department of Social and Health Services, Community Services Division; and Office of the Insurance Commissioner.<\/p>\n A quarterly event, the job<\/a> fair is “a low-stress, low-pressure opportunity to discover what type of opportunities exist here outside your back door,” stated Christopher Gentz, shift services supervisor for the Directorate of Human Resources.<\/p>\n Additional job fairs like the Jan. 30 event will be held May 8, July 10 and Sept. 11.<\/p>\n To get ready for them, “dress for success,” bring your resume and practice your elevator pitch, Gentz said.<\/p>\n An elevator pitch is a “quick intro of yourself, who you are and what you’re wanting to do,” Handoe stated, discussing that the ability is taught as part of the TAP.<\/p>\n Among the task fair’s objectives<\/a> was to assist individuals learn more about career opportunities and how their with them, Gentz said.<\/p>\n Education is a key benefit of participating in a job<\/a> reasonable, as about 40% of those who start with the TAP discover they’re “not all set to make that jump yet,” or they have seen the available opportunities and choose to continue serving, Gentz stated.<\/p>\n “We see that generally every year,” he said. “We desire them to make an informed choice about their career.”<\/p>\n Part of the education piece is discovering about financial resources, including credit reports, budget plans and “building a savings so you have something to work with when it’s time to go out,” Handoe stated.<\/p>\n “Everybody’s going to get out of the Army at some point,” he stated, “but while you’re in, are you doing everything you can to prepare to go out?”<\/p>\n Job fairs also exist to assist people with networking, seeing what individuals in the outside world are looking for – including certifications, accreditations and education – and finding out about their employing practices, https:\/\/www.opad.biz\/<\/a> Handoe said.<\/p>\n “You should be doing prep work now for what it is you desire to do later on down the road,” he said.<\/p>\n That preparation work consists of preparing for job fairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n “You need to go into a hiring fair with a strategy of what you’re going to do and not simply meander around,” Handoe said.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2022\/images\/no-college-cover.png\")
