JBLM Job Fair Showcases State Employment Opportunities<\/b><\/p>\n

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – Staff Sergeant Danika Nolan’s military exit date is a couple of weeks away, and she’s preparing for the transition at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.<\/p>\n

As part of a group of about 30 task candidates, she attended a hiring fair Jan. 30 that showcased Washington State career opportunities at JBLM’s Hawk Career Center.<\/p>\n

“I just try to take benefit of all the resources and services that the (Transition Assistance Program) Center needs to provide, just to make certain I’m as prepared as possible,” she said.<\/p>\n

The focus of the task fair on state employment<\/a>, rather than employment<\/a> in different industries, made it different than others on the installation. Sponsored by the Veterans Employee Resource Group, WorkSource and [empty]<\/a> the TAP, it started with a panel of veterans from state companies, who shared their experiences and responded to concerns. Following the panel, recruiters from state agencies were readily available to answer working with questions, said Frank Handoe, deputy shift services manager for the TAP.<\/p>\n

Informational tables represented organizations including VERG, and Washington State’s Department of Veterans Affairs and VA Apprenticeship Program; Department of Children, Youth and Families; Department of Social and Health Services, Community Services Division; and Office of the Insurance Commissioner.<\/p>\n

A quarterly event, the task fair is “a low-stress, low-pressure chance to discover what kind of chances exist here outside your back door,” said Christopher Gentz, teachersconsultancy.com<\/a> transition services manager for the Directorate of Human Resources.<\/p>\n

Additional job<\/a> fairs like the Jan. 30 event will be held May 8, July 10 and Sept. 11.<\/p>\n

Among the job fair’s goals was to help people learn about profession opportunities and how their abilities align with them, Gentz said.<\/p>\n

Education is a key advantage of going to a job fair, as about 40% of those who begin with the TAP discover they’re “not prepared to make that dive yet,” or they have actually seen the available chances and decide to continue serving, Gentz said.<\/p>\n

“We see that generally every year,” he said. “We desire them to make an informed decision about their profession.”<\/p>\n

Part of the education piece is learning about finances, including credit reports, budget plans and “constructing a savings so you have something to deal with when it’s time to go out,” Handoe stated.<\/p>\n

“Everybody’s going to get out of the Army one day,” he said, “but while you remain in, are you doing whatever you can to prepare to get out?”<\/p>\n

Job fairs also exist to assist individuals with networking, seeing what people in the outdoors world are trying to find – including accreditations, accreditations and education – and discovering their working with practices, Handoe said.<\/p>\n

“You should be doing prep work now for what it is you want to do later down the road,” he stated.<\/p>\n

That preparation work consists of preparing for task fairs.<\/p>\n
